Giving a reptile the right home

Creating a home for a reptile can be tricky as they require specialist equipment and tightly controlled conditions.

The cost of reptile vivariums at www.petsathome.com ensures that everyone can afford to keep a reptile as a pet, and a little research will ensure you have a happy, healthy animal.

A reptile vivarium is usually a glass or plastic tank with a wire mesh or plastic cover that allows the air to flow, but will not give the animal any chance to escape.

Ideally, you should aim to replicate the reptile’s natural environment. Depending on the animal, you may need to create anything from a hot, dry, sandy space to something wet, dark and tropical, so bear in mind these conditions when choosing your reptile vivarium.

This means you will need different materials, such as soil, sand or wood chips and different types of vegetation, rocks and access to water.

The light and temperature will need to be carefully controlled, so you should have a bulb and heater that can be set on a timer.

Many reptiles will need areas to eat, bask, sleep and cool down, so ensure the vivarium is not the same throughout. Your pet may also need to nest or hide, so provide loose materials and avoid fixing anything down, and branches or rocks at different levels can be used for climbing.

While considering all these aspects it is also worthwhile thinking about where you will keep the reptile vivarium and how it will look. You should be able to keep an eye on your pet without having to disturb it, so ensure there is a clear view into the tank.
